If your itchy, red and watery eyes aren’t getting better, it may not be allergies. You may be suffering from conjunctivitis, otherwise known as pink eye. At George A. Roebuck O.D. – Family Eyecare we see many patients who are surprised to find they’re suffering from conjunctivitis. It’s not just a kid’s disease, and it doesn’t always happen when you come in contact with other people who have it.
Optometrist in Bronx Talks Conjunctivitis Symptoms
It’s important that you have our optometrist in Bronx diagnose your eye problems, instead of just assuming you’re having a bad allergic reaction to the seasons. Pink eye can be very contagious, and early treatment can help relieve the worst of the symptoms quickly. If you’re suffering from any of these symptoms, come in to see our eye doctor for an examination.
- Redness in the inner eyelid or the white of the eye
- A thick yellow discharge, especially after sleeping, that crusts over the eyelashes
- Green or white discharge from the eye
- Increased tears
- A painful sensitivity to light
- Itching, burning eyes
Causes of Conjunctivitis
Pink eye has many causes, which can make it difficult to diagnose without seeing an eye doctor. Conjunctivitis caused by bacteria is treated with antibiotics in the form of eye drops or pills. Pink eye caused by allergens or irritants will improve when the cause is removed.
The most common cause of conjunctivitis is a virus and, like a cold virus, it just has to be endured until it gets better on its own. You can relieve the symptoms, though. This form can be highly contagious, so wash your hands often and don’t share pillows, towels or anything else that touches your face. Cool compresses on the eyes will help with the itching and swelling. Throw away any contact lenses worn when you developed pink eye, and wear glasses until your eyes have healed.
